The month of April brings new buds to the trees and joy to the hearts of runners and walkers alike. Along with the spring season come fun-filled races and events for adults, couples, families and children. Check out all that Monmouth and Ocean counties have to offer exercise enthusiasts this spring.



On Saturday, April 8, at 9:30 a.m. the Tinton Falls Fire Company will host the first Flashover 5k event.

The 5k race will be held at Monmouth Regional High School, Norman J. Field Way in Tinton Falls, 07724, There will be events for the whole family, including a one-mile fitness walk and a 150-yard kids dash. Proceeds will benefit the Tinton Falls Fire Company, which will host a post-race party.

A 5k event will also take place in Asbury Park on Saturday, April 8.

The Arc of Monmouth will be hosting the annual 5k run followed by a walk at the Asbury Park Boardwalk. The event attracts over 1,000 participants in either the 5k run at 8:30 a.m. or the walk at 11 a.m. Proceeds support the Arc of Monmouth, which provides programs for county residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Participants are invited to a lunch and complimentary after-party at the Asbury Park Convention Hall at noon. To learn more, visit


On Sunday, April 9, the Shore Athletic Club will host the 52nd Annual Capt. Ronald Zinn Memorial Races in Wall Township.

For those seeking to run in honor of the men and women killed in Vietnam, the memorial 5k and 10k events will be held at the Wall Township Recreation Complex, 2700 Allaire Road in Wall Township.

The events will be broken up into two different events: a 10k walk at 8:30 a.m. and a 5k run at 10:30 a.m.

The walk/run is organized by the Shore Athletic Club and honors Capt. Ronald Zinn and all the patriots who lost their lives serving in Vietnam.

The second annual Lobster Run 5k will be held Saturday, April 15, at 4 p.m. beginning at the Langosta Lounge, 1000 Ocean Ave., Asbury Park.

The 5k run/walk is sponsored by Langosta Lounge, the American Littoral Society and Split Second Racing to “Care for the Coast.”

Race participants can start any time between 9 to 10 a.m. Faster runners are encouraged to start later. Tickets are being sold for the breakfast buffets available after the race. To learn more,


On Saturday, April 22, another exciting Jersey Shore race will be held in Asbury Park; the annual RunAPalooza Marathon Relay, Half Marathon and 5k.

RunAPalooza is hosted by the Jersey Shore Running Club to support the Monmouth and Ocean County Special Olympics.

The marathon will begin at 8 a.m. in Seaside Heights. The half marathon and 5k will begin at 8:30 a.m., on Ocean Avenue in front of Convention Hall.

On Saturday, April 29, the Twin Lights Historical Society will host the Twin Lights 5k Run at 9 a.m.

The 5k event will be held at the historical site of the Twin Lights on Light House Road in Highlands.

On Saturday, April 29, the Jersey Shore Running Club will present the 13th annual Lake Como 5k Romp at Bar Anticipation in Belmar.

The run and walk event will start at 10 a.m. at Bar Anticipation, 703 16th Avenue in Lake Como.

Participants will receive a T-shirt and entry to a post-race party, All proceeds will benefit the Elks Camp Moore for Children with Specials Needs in addition to the Lake Como Giving Tree.

The Novo Nordisk New Jersey Marathon hosts a weekend full of events.

On Saturday, April 29, the Robert Wood Johnson Barnabas Healthy Family Festival, kids races and a 5k race will take place.

At 9 a.m. the 50-yard dash will be held for ages 2 to 4; at 9:15 a.m. the 1/4-mile run will be held for ages 5 to 6; at 9:30 a.m. the half-mile run for ages 7 to 8; and at 9:45 a.m. the Kids Move the New Jersey Marathon 1.2- mile run will be held.

Check in for the children’s events will be held from 8 to 9 a.m. on the Great Lawn at the Ocean Promenade in Long Branch.

The 5k race will be held on the boardwalk and will start at 10:30 a.m.

Registration and check-in will take place from 8 to 10:15 a.m.


On Sunday, April 30, the Novo Nordisk New Jersey Marathon will be held at Monmouth Park in Oceanport.

The 7:30 a.m. start time will include the marathon [26.2 miles], half marathon [13.1 miles], half marathon relay [6.1 miles] and wheelchair participants.

The post-race celebration and festival will begin at 8 a.m. on the Long Branch Promenade.

The Novo Nordisk New Jersey Marathon Health & Fitness Expo will be held at Monmouth Park on Friday, April 28, from 1 to 7 p.m. and Saturday, April 29, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The expo is open to the public.

On Sunday, May 7, Centra State Medical Center will host the 8th annual Paulette’s C of Blue event in Freehold.

The event will include a 5k race, 1-mile race and Kid’s Fun Run and will support the Centra State Colorectal Cancer Center.

The 5k will begin at 10 a.m., the 1-mile race will begin at 10:30 a.m., and the Kid’s Fun Run will begin at 10:45 a.m.

On Saturday, May 13, the Monmouth Beach School will host the 23rd Annual Monmouth Beach PTO Run.

The event will begin at 7 Hastings Place, Monmouth Beach, NJ 07750 and will include a 5k run at 9 a.m., children’s races for ages 7 and under at 9:45 a.m. and the Dolphin Mile Race for ages 12 and under at 10 a.m.

On Sunday, May 14, the St. James School in Red Bank will host the 6th annual Run with Royals 5k and half-mile run at the Long Branch Promenade.

The children’s half-mile run will begin at 9:45 a.m. and the 5k walk/run will begin at 9 a.m.

The event is open to all – runners, walkers, joggers, children and families and will benefit the St. James Elementary School.

For those interested in attending a colorful run on the beach, Belmar will be hosting a 3k Color Run on Saturday, May 20, on the boardwalk. The event will also feature a walk and a 100-yard splash event.

The PossAbilities Walk will be held on the Belmar Boardwalk at 9 a.m.

The Junior 100-Yard Splash will be held on the beach at 9:30 a.m. and will offer participants the opportunity to be splashed with paints.

The 3k color run will be held on the beach after the dash at 10:45 a.m. and participants will be splashed with colorful paint.

The PossAbilities Walk combined with the Color Me Belmar 3k benefit Family Resources Associates, which supports families and individuals dealing with disabilities.

Also on Saturday, May 20, the annual Walk for Mary’s Place by the Sea will be held on Ocean Avenue in Ocean Grove at 12 p.m.

Mary’s Place by the Sea hosts the walk to raise funds to support their mission to serve women battling cancer. To follow the race, music, beverages, food and vendors will be available.

On Saturday, May 20, the Borough of Bay Head will host a 5k race at 8:30 a.m. at the Bay Head Firehouse, 81 Bridge Ave.

The Bay Head 5k Memory Run is held each year to support the Kate Shea Foundation in its mission to provide funds toward cancer research and youth education.

On Saturday, May 20, St. Mary’s Athletic Association and the Jersey Shore Running Club will host the 14th annual Spring into Summer 5k event at 538 Church St. in Middletown, NJ, 07748.

The event will include a 5k race, one-mile run, and children’s races. The 5k will begin at 8:30 a.m., the one-mile run will begin at 8:10 a.m. and children’s races for ages 4 to 12 will begin at 10 a.m.

Proceeds will benefit the Monsignor Bulman Stadium Fund, which is dedicated to improving the athletic facilities of Mater Dei Prep and the Saint Mary School.

To follow the races, a barbecue will be held for participants and attendees.

The 15th annual Michael W. Thorne Scholarship 4-Mile Run/Walk will be held Sunday, May 21, at Franklin Lake in West Long Branch at 9 a.m.

Kids’ races will be held at 9:30 a.m., with an awards ceremony at 10:30 a.m.

The race is held each year in honor of West Long Branch firefighter Michael W. Thorne, who died battling a fire in 1984. All proceeds are donated to the Michael W. Thorne Scholarship Fund.

Kids’ races range from 25 yards to one-mile long. This year’s race is the 15th annual race and will be the final Michael W. Thorne Scholarship Race.

Each year, Spring Lake hosts a five-mile run on the boardwalk where runners from far and near join together to celebrate the start of summer. This year, the Spring Lake Five will be held on Saturday, May 27, at 8:30 a.m.

Registration for the event has reached capacity. However, spectators are encouraged to join in the fun and cheer on the participants.
